DVC (RPE) gets appointed to Education sector Taskforce

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RPE), Prof. Lucy Irungu has been appointed to the Taskforce charged with realigning the Higher Education, Science and Technology sector with the constitution.

The appointment was made by the Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Prof. Margaret Kamar and is carried in the Gazette notice no. 11626 of 23 September 2011.

Prof Irungu giving Opening RemarksThe Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RPE), Prof. Lucy Irungu hosted the Grand Challenges Explorations Workshop. The Grand Challenges Explorations is a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation initiative which seeks bold ideas from innovative thinkers to solve global health problems.

The workshop which was held at the Confucius Centre, College of Humanities and Social Sciences on 13th September 2011 attracted researchers from University of Nairobi, JKUAT, Kenyatta University and other regional Research Institutions.


In her opening remarks, Prof. Irungu said that the mainstay of the University of Nairobi research and innovation strategy for developing and commercialising our research findings is to align our courses and research with partners who bring complementary resources and capabilities to our team.

Dr. Lilian Wambua of SBS wins 2011 AWARD Fellowship

Dr. Lilian Wambua of the School of Biological Sciences, University of Nairobi has been selected as a 2011 Award Fellow.

AWARD is a professional development program that strenghtnes the research and leadership skills of African women in agricultural science, empowering them to contribute more effectively to poverty alleviation and food security in sub-sharan Africa.

Over 70 successful candidates have been selected from a pool of 785 applicants from 11 countries. AWARD currently has 180 fellows in its program.

IBM Partners with KENET/UON to Launch Corporate Services

The IBM Corporate Service Core (IBM CSC) which was launched on 4th July 2011 at the new KENET training room at the Jomo Kenyatta Memorial Library University of Nairobi, gave their first Interim report on 20 July, 2011.

The launch event was attended by representatives from various KENET member institutions who inluded Vice Chancellors, Principals and Heads of ICT. The guest of Honor was Prof. Crispin Kiamba who is the Parmanent Secretary in the ministry of Higher Education, Science.
