Africa-US Initiative delagates, with UoN top managers.
The University of Nairobi is strengthening, studies in dryland farming through collaboration with stakeholders and partners from the U.S. The partners through their representatives from Africa-U.S. Higher Education Initiative, visited the University of Nairobi and were received by Prof. Isaac Mbeche, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. They were: Dr. Tully Cornick, Higher Education for Development, Jessie Brown, Associate General Counsel at the American Council on Education, and John Vaughn, Association of American Universities and Michael Coughenour , Colorado State University.

The MOU allows the University of Nairobi to collaborate with UPEI in various fields.The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Canada has once again signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the University of Nairobi to include more academic programmes in the collaboration. Previously, UPEI had a link with the School of Education and Veterinary Sciences.
The University of Nairobi (UoN) is confirmed as the top ranked University locally according to Webometric Ranking of World universities. UoN is ranked 2nd in East Africa, 17th in Africa and 1,367 worldwide, a massive improvement from previous rankings and the best position ever attained by a local university.
It is second to Makerere University while University of Cape Town leads the rankings in Africa.
The Vice Chancellor of University of Nairobi Prof. George A. O. Magoha and the President of Kanazawa University, Japan, Prof. Shin-ichi Nakamura signed a Memorandum of Understanding on October 4, 2011 at Kanazawa University, Japan. Kanazawa University, ranked 21 out of the 732 universities in Japan, has 547 funded projects amounting to approximately 1.6 billion Japanese yen for the current year and is uniquely strong in Medicine, Engineering, Law, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences among others.
This memorandum will facilitate collaboration in areas including but not limited to: (i)Exchange of academic material, students, faculty and research fellows (ii) Joint research and publication.
Ms. Catherine Kadogo Kitonde, a UoN staff and MSC student, from School of Biological Sciences ,College of Biological and Physical Sciences was awarded The Essential Electronic Agricultural Library (TEEAL) Best Research Paper Competition 2011 Category 2, MSc student Second prize on 26th of October 2011 for her paper titled "Antimicrobial Activity and Phytochemical Study of Vernonia glabra (Steetz) Oliv. & Hiern. in Kenya"
The first ITU Green ICT Application Challenge sought to uncover innovative concept papers for climate change related ICT applications.
One of the challenge’s finalists, Ms. Euphraith Muthoni Masinde from Kenya, developed a concept for an application entitled, “A Community-Based System for Biodiversity Degradation.” This application aims to tackle climate change through community engagement and knowledge sharing. The app proposes a system harnessing traditional and indigenous knowledge on biodiversity and conservation. This information will be brought to light through community-based focus groups, and then disseminated to users through a database feeding data directly to mobile phones. Users would then build on this knowledge to create their own conservation practices.

The Objectives of the Open Day/Open Access Week:
To create awareness of library services and resources, and equip users with e-resources searching skills to increase usage.
To promote Global Open Access Initiatives, research, scholarship and publishing and connect users to Freely Available Information Resources
The Library invites you for training on Information Access. Training will be done on Tuesday, 1st – Thursday, 3rd Nov. 2011. There will be two sessions per day. First session will be held from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm and second session from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. The Rattansi Education Trust has donated Ksh.12.6 million to support needy students in institutions of higher learning. The donation was made by Dr. Vijoo Rattansi in a function held at the University of Nairobi and attended by representatives of various institutions of higher learning.
On your right: University of Nairobi’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha, receives a cheque worth Ksh 2.1 million from Mrs. Vijoo Rattansi towards supporting needy students in the University. Over Ksh 12.6 Million was donated by the Rattansi Trust to support needy students in higher institution.
While handing over the cheque to the institutions, Mrs. Rattansi said that the donation was meant to assist needy students to meet their college fees. The University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha paid tribute to the Rattansi Educational Trust for supporting poor students to access higher education. He challenged other affluent members of society to emulate Rattansi’s example and assist in supporting education in the country.
