The Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, made an extensive tour of the College of Biological and Physical Science.
Dr. Vijoo, who was visiting the College for the first time since her appointment as Chancellor, was accompanied by the Chairman of Council, Dr. Idle Farah and the University of Nairobi management team lead by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha.
During the tour, Dr. Vijoo had an opportunity to visit various College units, sampling some of the College facilities and activities in place. The Chancellor also interacted with faculty and students, and she challenged the students to work hard, acquiring skills that will contribute to the development of the nation. -

The University of Nairobi (UoN) members of staff have been challenged to ensure that the complaints handling mechanisms in place are effective allowing customers and stakeholders’ complaints made are resolved efficiently. This was echoed by various speakers during a training on capacity development on effective complaints management for complaints handling officers and staff at the University of Nairobi.
The training targeting members of the University’s Central Corruption Committees, Colleges, Student Welfare Authority (SWA), University of Nairobi Enterprise Services (UNES) and Central units Corruption Prevention Committees’ members saw the participants trained by facilitators from the Commission for Administrative Justice (CAJ).

As part of activities scheduled for the 2014 World Refugees Day, the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies (IDIS) hosted a forum on ‘Asylum Space in Kenya: Where We Are and Where We Are Heading?’
The event organized in partnership with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Department of Refugees Affairs (DRA) mainly focused on the current state of refugees in Kenya with deliberations on how best refugees can be diplomatically persuaded to go back to their countries as well as the criteria to be employed to distinguish between a genuine refugee and one that is not.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and Barclays Bank of Kenya (BBK) launched Host-To-Host, an automated seamless cash management system which will serve students and other stakeholders by hastening payment processes in the University.
Host-To-Host is part of the University’s digitization programme that ensures end-to-end integration between UON’s treasury system and the bank system, resulting in a decrease of errors and rejects that result from manual collections and payments processes. The unique system is also flexible and accommodates mobile payments available from Barclays. Host–To-Host which is embedded in the Barclays Integrator (the bank’s Internet Banking solution), enhances transparency, security and high standards of accountability through readily available information that is also credible for audit purposes. -

Christine Mukami Njiru, third year student, School of Business, has been nominated by Total, Kenya to represent the country in the Total Summer School in France. Ms Mukami was nominated through a rigorous process that involved students from the School of Business and the School of Engineering. She will now join nominees from other countries for the weeklong Summer School commencing June 21, 2013.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the 7th edition of Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games today unveiled the objects of the Games, namely: the Logo, Theme and Mascot during a ceremony held at the University of Nairobi Chancellor’s Court.
The objectives of these games are to promote sports in higher institutions of learning, provide networking forums for students, encourage female student’s participation in sports, and promote cooperation among African universities and nations. The games will be held between 11th and 18th, July, 2014. -

The three-day event that was held on 8th and 10th May 2014, at the Great Court, Main Campus, provided an opportunity for the University to share information with its stakeholders on its programmes and services.

The University of Nairobi held its inaugural graduation ceremony for the first cohort of the Early Grade Reading Instruction Curriculum (EGRIC) teachers.
During the ceremony, 298 graduands comprising 210 pre-service teachers undertaking the regular Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education course, 46 in-service teachers from evening and outreach programs and 42 in-service teachers from Kisii County and Mathare slums who were identified through University of Nairobi’s Corporate Social Responsibility approach. -

Senators have a key role to play in demystifying the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 to citizens and ensuring its implementation. Stakeholders in a forum organized to discuss constitutionalism, noted that Kenyans need to be empowered for prosperity by equipping them with broad based knowledge on their citizenship, human rights, good governance, sustainability livelihoods and development. This was the key take-out during an interactive round table forum for Senators and key stakeholders organized by the University of Nairobi (UoN) and Ford Foundation, to discuss their role in the implementation of the Constitution 2010.
The forum which is part of the ‘Elimika’ activities – an initiative on Construction of Knowledge Societies – brought together Senators and academia. The Senate Speaker, Hon. Ekwee Ethuro lauded the role played by Kenyan universities and Senators in creating a culture of constitutionalism and the rule of law and urged them to create more public participation. -

The University of Nairobi (UoN) in partnership with the Office of the High Commission for Human Rights (OHCHR) has entered into discussions on the possibility of offering a common undergraduate course on Human Rights Education (HRE). This was revealed today, April 9th, 2014, when representatives from OHCR paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, UoN.
The agreement will see UoN’s Centre for Human Rights and Peace (CHRP) and OHCR develop a curricular in human rights education with special focus on the establishment of the common undergraduate course in HRE. In addition, CHRP will integrate and sensitize all stakeholders in the University on HRE. -

There was pomp and celebration today, when 5,090 graduands consisting of 19 PhDs, 651 Masters, 2,877 Bachelors, 35 Post Graduate Diplomas, and 1,508 Diplomas were conferred with Degrees and awarded Diplomas during a graduation ceremony presided over by Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, the Chancellor of the University.
The ceremony which was the 51st in the history of the University’s existence drew graduands from the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Architecture and Engineering, Biological and Physical Sciences and Education and External Studies. -

The University of Nairobi joined the rest of the world today in commemorating the 2014 World AIDS Day. HIV testing, counseling, breast and cervical cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes and hypertension screening are among the activities planned for the day.
The event, themed “Getting to zero; zero new infections, zero AIDS related stigma and discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths,” held at the Kenya Science Campus, saw local artists entertain the students, members of staff and the general public throughout the day. -

8, 803 graduands have been conferred and awarded with degrees and diplomas at the University of Nairobi’s 52nd graduation ceremony by the Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi who was also conferred with honorary degree in humane letters.
Royal Media Group Chairman, Samuel Macharia was also conferred with doctor of letters. During the ceremony, a record 104 PhDs were conferred bringing the total Phds awarded by University this year to 123.

As Kenya celebrates 50 years of mutual cooperation with Korea, the University of Nairobi joined the celebrations by launching the Korean Studies Programme to be offered by the University as a degree and certificate course and launching the Korean Studies website. The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to the first ten winners of the 2013 Essay Competition. The Essay Competition 2013, saw 162 students drawn from different colleges participate.

Speaker of East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA), Rt. Hon. Margaret N. Zziwa, has commended the College of Health Sciences (CHS) addressing the different emerging challenges in the health sector. The Speaker noted that indeed the region has the brains and the capacity to tackle problems. She was leading members of EALA who visited the CHS. She revealed that UoN was identified as one of the East African Community’s Centres of Excellence in November 2013.
As part of the integration process, EALA committed to spreading the word that the EAC has and is developing homegrown solutions to health issues. Hon Zziwa commended the College for setting up Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes that have taken health care services to those who cannot access or afford it.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) recognizes the importance of establishing and enhancing collaborative linkages based on mutual understanding, equal partnership and reciprocity with institutions. To this end, UoN values partnerships and one such partnership is that between the Ford Foundation and the University of Nairobi. During a courtesy call by a team from the Foundation led by Ms. Hilary Pennington, Vice President, Education, Free Expression and creativity, Ford Foundation and Mr. Maurice Makoloo, Ford Foundation’s regional representative, Prof. Henry Mutoro, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, said that the University was pleased with the relationship it has with the Foundation and is looking forward to doing much more.

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Prof. George Magoha has challenged the newly admitted 2014/2015 cohort of students to maintain the University of Nairobi gold standard in the region by being exemplary achievers, world champions, and trend setters as they undertake their studies at the University.
In his speech, he asked the students to participate actively in club activities and professional associations in order to acquire leadership and personal skills, which are not attained through formal class or lessons but are drawn from interaction and acculturation of best practice. -
