Open-Seneca, University of Cambridge is collaborating with the University of Nairobi, Science and Technology Park, Maker Space to build low-cost mobile air pollution sensors.
Open-Seneca is a project that aims to create a global air quality sensor network with the help of citizen science to build sensors, measure their air pollution exposure in a bid to raise awareness, initiate behavioral change and inform policy.

University of Nairobi Students Association, UNSA, leaders have been advised to embrace teamwork to enable them achieve their mandate.The Student Council is having a three days retreat at Mombasa Beach Hotel, from June 27-29, 2019.
Speaking during the retreat, Prof. Peter Mbithi took the opportunity to congratulate the first female student leader, Ann Mvurya. “You have put us in the books of history. Now, prove to the entire world that you are the student leader and perform. Balance class work and leadership. True education doesn't consist of acquiring facts about sciences and arts, but development of character,” he said. The Vice Chancellor urged student leaders to prove to the world that they are in a world class university committed to scholarly excellence. The student leaders were challenged to be the shining light, examples that others will emulate. “Students are looking up to you for direction and guidance”, said Prof. Mbithi. When faced with challenges, UNSA leaders were told to embrace consultation both within themselves and with the University management. “We are one team. Let us face the challenges that face us as one team. I urge the College Principals to support the student leaders emotionally, financially and morally, so that they can implement their mandate.

The University of Nairobi and partners held celebrations to mark the International Day against Alcohol and Drug Abuse and illicit trafficking (IDADA) 2019. IDADA is observed on 26th June, a day that was agreed upon 30 years ago by the United Nations general assembly.
This year’s theme was, ‘Justice for health and health for justice’ emphasizing that justice and health go hand in hand in addressing drug problems. This campaign emphasizes the inclusivity of a comprehensive approach to drug prevention and treatment with the needs to integrate questions of justice and health.

The University of Nairobi hosted a discussion panel in commemoration of the 55th anniversary of Ethio-Kenyan relations under the theme, “Ethiopia –Kenya: 55 years of Strategic Partnership.”
The panelists reflected on opportunities and challenges in the Horn of Africa as well as investment opportunities that can be explored between Kenya and Ethiopia. The panelists were Prof Karuti Kanyinga (Research Professor of Development Studies, IDS, University of Nairobi); Dr Joy Kiiru (Senior Lecturer, School of Business, UoN); Mr Anteneh Alemu (Deputy Commissioner at the Ethiopian Investment Commission); Ambassador Boaz Mbaya ( Former Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs); and Dr Silvester Kasuku ( Director General and CEO, LAPSSET).

Plans are underway to establish the University of Nairobi Institute for Blue Economy and Ocean Studies (UoN-IBEOS). This was revealed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o at the handing over of the modular boards by that were used at the Sustainable Blue Economy Conference to the University by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Prof. Ogeng’o was speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor.

The University of Nairobi Mycotoxins Laboratory has been awarded the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation by the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS). This was after the laboratory passed the necessary evaluation set by the national accreditation body.
The certificate was presented to the University on May 21, 2019 and was received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o who was representing the Vice-Chancellor. -

In a first of its kind, the University Management hosted a Professoriate Assembly which brought together all the professors in the University of Nairobi.
At the Assembly, the Professors shared their views pertaining strategic issues in the university. The areas of focus include governance, leadership, management and administration; competitiveness and image; resource mobilization; teaching and learning; research, innovation and enterprise; and student life.

Elimika and Wajibu Wetu, the two youth programmes being implemented by the UNESCO/UNITWIN Chair in the University of Nairobi will soon be rebranded into “Elimika Wajibika-Vijana Amkeni.”
“There is need to rebrand Elimika and Wajibu Wetu into one formidable and inclusive Programme. This rebranding will connect three circles of knowledge that is the University of Nairobi, Elimika and Wajibu Wetu,” said the UNESCO/UNITWIN Chair, Prof. Judith Bahemuka. “The youth programme is centered on facilitating young people’s active participation and engagement with systems, technologies, institutions and governments, towards finding space for expression and growth.”
Prof. Bahemuka was speaking at the Mid Term Review workshop that was held on May 17, 2019 at UoN. At the session, the youth programme team presented their research findings to key stakeholders on the youth understanding of development issues and their ability to apply the Constitution, policies, laws, rules and standards in their daily livelihoods. The key stakeholders included youth leaders, representatives from the national government, Nairobi and Makueni counties and various institutions of higher learning including UoN and University of Eldoret. Ford Foundation, Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM) and Kenya Human Rights Institute were also in attendance. -

“New patriotism is one where a Kenyan endeavors to exponentially grow their knowledge, value and skills to continuously impact the society nationally and internationally; do not be obsessed by quick wins. Low hanging fruits should never be an obsession for a country that’s thinking long-term. He applauded Kenyans for having the best human resource pool and encouraged them to use it to their advantage especially in the global market.”

In a two-day high level strategy workshop that was held at the University of Nairobi towers, Meru County Government, University of Nairobi and other stakeholders engaged in a rigorous writing session; a bill that would legislate the management of aflatoxin in their food.
The workshop was as a result of a collaborative project led by Prof. Sheila Okoth, Associate Professor of Botany (Mycology), University of Nairobi and Prof. Tim Herrman, Texas A&M University, USA who serves as the State Chemist and Director of the Office of the Texas State Chemist.

The Mitsubishi Corporation has awarded 14 University of Nairobi students scholarships through its annual Mitsubishi Corporation International Scholarships Programme. The scholarships presented by the Corporation’s General Manager, Nairobi Liaison Office, Mr. Ichiro Sugane were received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o who was representing the Vice-Chancellor.
The selected students, drawn from the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies as well as the School of Biological Sciences (BSc degree in Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources Management), come from needy backgrounds and have recorded excellent performance in their respective courses.
