Graduate School (GS)

The Graduate School's Service Charter sets the scope and the standards of service rendered to our postgraduate students, staff and stakeholders.

Internal Audit

The Department was established to provide consultancy and assurance services to the University.
It has ensured that management continues to put in place appropriate measures to improve controls and the management of risk that could affect the attainment of University goals.

Board of Common Undergraduate Courses

The Board of Common Undergraduate Courses, popularly known by its acronym BCUC, is a multidisciplinary department which is mandated with the authority of administering, the teaching, and examination of all common undergraduate courses throughout the entire University. The Board works in collaboration with faculties, schools, and institutes in order for it to deliver on its mandate.

The tasks of the University Library System towards the accomplishment of the functions and objectives enlisted in the University of Nairobi Act 1985 are, to carry out basic functions of acquiring, organizing and disseminating information in support of the University mission. More specifically it is to provide reading, reference, research materials and other library services to the students, academic staff, non-academic staff and to a limited number of qualified outsiders

Information, Communication & Technology Center (ICT)

The Information, Communication & Technology Center (ICT)  was established in the late 2002 with the aim of enabling the university realize its mandate of innovative use of ICT services and products to support research, learning, teaching and administrative processes


Finance Department is a service department charged with responsibility of managing financial resources of the University. As the University has grown over time, it has become a complex entity. It has also had to contend with an ever changing external environment. Resources are dwindling against the background of rising demand for higher education. Public Universities are all competing for scarce Government resources.


Transport department is charged with the responsibility of managing  the University of Nairobi transport services professionally and cost effectively, developing a fleet management system that effectively serves the University and providing and maintaining an optimum number of motor vehicles and equipment in excellent working condition.


Department is responsible for formulating the security policy/strategy and Management and co-ordination of the security network in the entire University of Nairobi.

Directorate of Corporate affairs

In order to achieve the outlined objectives, it is imperative for the university to build trust and strong relationships with diverse stakeholders for mutual support. The University occupies a pre-eminent position locally and regionally and it is its desire to enhance its reputation as a world-class university and a center of scholarly excellence. The Corporate affairs department will work with all the Directorates and Schools to promote the corporate image of the University.

The long term goal of enhancing the image is to build a strong corporate identity and reputation that will open more business opportunities and enhance corporate support for the University. The University’s has exhibited a lot of strength and resilience in adapting to the changes in the corporate environment and I have a strong conviction that together we can transform the institution into a self-sustaining world class university that is committed to scholarly excellence. The environment in which the University operates has become increasingly dynamic, competitive and unpredictable.

The University is also gradually evolving from the status of a public entity that is used to over-reliance on exchequer funding to one that is self-sustaining. To achieve a self-sustaining status, the University has to restructure its business processes in a manner that will inspire its stakeholders to support its development goals through enhanced capitation both from within and from without.

The University is intent in building its reputation as a world- class center of scholarly excellence in the face of the emerging challenges. It is therefore imperative to constantly review its strategic plan and align its strategic objectives to the national development agenda and the global development needs

  • Provide leadership in strategic communications.

Planning Division

The Planning Division is located in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office and is headed by the Registrar Planning. The Division provides informational support to the Vice-Chancellor’s Office and other units on across a range of planning related activities, including provision of management information and operational planning across the University.

Directorate of University Advancement

The Advancement Office is An Extension of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor charged with the mandate of resource mobilization for the University, establishing an endowment fund and taking lead in Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects. The Advancement Office is expected to strengthen research, increase endowment funds, promote experiential learning for students and promote their welfare with the objective of strengthening the UoN brand both locally and internationally.

Launched in 2015, the Advancement Office is a shared enterprise aligned with the vision, mission and key priorities of University top leadership and is integrated across institutional sectors. The mission of the University Advancement Office is to mobilize reources from private and public sources in support of the strategic priorities of the University. The responsibility of the Directorate of University Advancement is to serve as the coordinating agency for all solicitations of funds from individuals, foundations, businesses, corporations, government and other organizations on behalf of the University.


University Press

University of Nairobi Press (UONP) is a semi-autonomous publishing house owned by the University of Nairobi. It serves the three paramount functions of a university, namely: teaching, research and dissemination of results of scholarly inquiry. Publishing is a primary means of dissemination. A university press is therefore crucial in the realisation of the functions of a university, hence the University of Nairobi Press.

As an effective agent for the dissemination of research findings and communication of scholarly knowledge, UONP draws majority of its authors from among scholars in the universities and research institutions world wide.


The Administration Department is responsible for delivery of management’s service functions to all operating units. It therefore, endeavors to connect and inspire all its customers, provide leadership, stewardship and developing a sense of hope to all stakeholders.

Office of Career Services

The Office of Career Services (OCS) is charged with the mandate of taking care of students skills development, job placement, linking students with industry, academic advisory services, career testing and assessment, career fairs, venture capital fairs, counseling services, graduate tracking services, high school recruitments, students exchange, apprenticeship services, alumni networking, mentorship services, internship and improving the students life in campus among other services.

The goal is to increase graduates absorption in the market from the current less than 10 per cent to over 50 per cent. The University of Nairobi is committed to produce holistic graduates who are prepared for the job market and entrepreneurial activities.



The Procurement Department is one of the departments in the Central Administration that deals with acquisition of goods services and works for the University. It also deals with coordination of disposal of unserviceable, obsolete or surplus stores, assets and equipment. In order to carry out the above function the department is guided by the Public Procurement and Disposal Act, 2005 and the Regulations, 2006.

Academic Division

The Academic Division has the following functions:

  • Preparation of Syllabus and Regulations,
  • Co-ordination of examinations,
  • Undergraduate students admissions,
  • Academic staff development,

Management of student records



Estates Department is charged with the responsibility of managing the University’s physical assets spread out in all the campus as well as in several regions of the country.

Construction & Maintenance

Construction & Maintenance was previously known as Clerk of Works Division undertaking development works only. Physical facilities were under Estates Department. Following proposal for restructuring, Construction & Maintenance surfaced charged with the responsibility of maintaining existing facilities and developing new ones.

The main functions of the Department, therefore, are:

  • Developing and expanding physical facilities for the University

Maintaining the facilities through routine maintenance work

Sports & Games

The department dates back to the days of the Royal College of East Africa with 215 students in1956. It then offered the traditional sports of netball, soccer and volleyball.

Today, Sports and Games Department is responsible for provision of recreational and competitive sports for both students and the members of staff in the university. The services in the Department of Sports and Games are a concerted effort of the technical (Games tutors and Coaches) and the administrative staff, as well as the other stakeholders.

Center for International Programmes and Links (CIPL)

The Centre for International Programmes and Links is a unit in the University of Nairobi, charged with the responsibility of initiating, promoting, facilitating and coordinating international programmes and links, staff and student exchanges and mobility, collaborative research projects and worldwide networking.


Centre for Self Sponsored Programmes(CESSP)

The Centre for Self Sponsored Programmes (CESSP) was established by the University of Nairobi vide Statute XXXV in 2005.

It remained un-operational as its functions were being carried out by the University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services (UNES) Limited, a fully-owned subsidiary company of the University. UNES was formed by the University in 1996 with the mandate of carrying out commercial activities on behalf of the University.

Customer Experience & Information Centre

The University of Nairobi delights as the only University with a fully operationalized Customer Experience Centre dedicated to offering exceptional service to all the external and internal customers.

Little things matter, CEC dedicates itself to ensure that all customer correspondences are attended to their satisfaction.

We are open to serve our customers 24 hours, 7 days a week.

University Health Services

The University Health Services started in 1972 as an outpatient clinic for students. Members of staff and their dependants were attended to by appointed private doctors in Nairobi up to 1979. The Government funding to the University operations was sufficient   up to the late 1980’s. However with introduction of structural adjustment programs in the 1990’s, the government funding to the University was reduced thereby affecting provision of various services including health care.

Legal Office

The University of Nairobi Legal Office, being an integral unit in the day to day running of issues touching and/or requiring legal input, has grown in stature in the delivery of timely and competent services to the University Management, Students, Staff, University community and the General Public at large. This has impacted positively in tandem with stipulations recommended by the ISO 9001:2008.

Quality Assurance

The University of Nairobi Directorate of Quality Assurance is the latest addition to the many service departments in the university. The functions of the directorate are stated, inter alia, as development and implementation of Quality Assurance Policy and Procedures for monitoring the programme quality and that of delivery processes, and synthesis of topical Quality Assurance matters in higher education. As a sub-system of the University of Nairobi system, the focus point for the directorate is the University’s vision, which is:

Student Welfare Authority

The history of Students Welfare Authority (SWA) is intertwined with that of the mother institution - University of Nairobi. Like all organizations, SWA has undergone fundamental changes to evolve into a dynamic entity that it is today. Students Welfare Authority accommodates the largest number of clients compared with any other institution in the hospitality industry. It is with pride that we can state that we have served the largest number of University graduates and presently we accommodate the largest number of students in this region close to ten thousand. SWA has faced and responded to challenges broadly in three categories, structural, capacity and policy changes.

Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO)

Pursuant to Section 7 of the University of Nairobi Act (now repealed) the University of Nairobi formulated its IP Policy to guide its management, employees, students and associates concerning the development, ownership, management and marketing of intellectual property. The policy was formally approved by the University of Nairobi Council in 2006.

Dean of Students
The office of the Dean of Students was established in the early 70s and its primarily concerned with students welfare from entry to graduation.
The office has had several Deans of Students with the current one being Dr.Fr. Wamugunda Wakimani D.Within the department there are also Assistant Deans of Students, Counselors, Chaplains and other administrative staff.
Quality Assurance

The activities that provide Quality Assurance in the University of Nairobi are as old as the University itself. Universities globally, by their nature, have always had autonomy over quality standards. Like most other universities, The University of Nairobi has had team structures prescribed in its operating statute that carried out activities with intended outcomes of providing quality assurance for its programmes and setting the quality standards. The team structures that carried out these quality activities include the Senate, Deans Committee, Board of Postgraduate Studies, College Academic Boards, Faculty Boards, and other academic sub-committees.
